Champion ironwoman receives outstanding alumni award
Bachelor of Business graduate and current World Ironwoman Champion Kristy Munroe has received this year’s Outstanding Alumni of the Year Award in recognition of her achievements in surf life saving on local, national and international levels.
Now in its second year, the Outstanding Alumni of the Year Award was presented at the University Foundation event 'Building Excellence' on 12 September 2006.
Kristy, who is employed as a sports reporter for WIN Television and Membership Retention Manager for Alexandra Headland Surf Life Saving Club, says she has always placed importance on gaining a quality education alongside her sporting successes.
She says while completing her USC degree on a part-time basis was challenging, it was also worthwhile.
“My Bachelor of Business degree has given me numerous and diverse business skills that I’ve been able to call on (in the workplace),” Kristy says.
Kristy has now set her sights on achieving even more in the sporting arena.
“I continue to compete almost each weekend during summer, challenging myself against the ocean and the ever improving skills of my fellow competitors,” she says.
“I have set myself new goals and am striving towards them.”
Award candidates are determined via nominations from USC Faculty Deans. The award recipient is then selected by a panel of senior staff, including USC Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Thomas.
Alumni Homecoming

The Alumni Homecoming, held on Saturday 2 September, was an opportunity for USC graduates to return home to the Sunshine Coast and the USC campus.
From the Business Seminar to the Gallery Exhibition, Campus Tours and the Spring Gathering at The Wine Bar Restaurant in Maroochydore, graduates were able to catch up with staff and fellow alumni, celebrate the University's tenth anniversary and find out what is planned for the next 10 years.
The USC Alumni Relations office would like to extend a special thank you to those alumni who supported and attended the event.

Australia’s newest nursing facilities open on campus

USC’s new state-of-the-art nursing laboratories were open to the public for the first time during the University’s Courses for Careers Day in August, highlighting the University’s commitment to providing up-to-date learning and teaching facilities.
The $12 million building, which includes computer, wet, sports and nursing laboratories, will enhance the experiences of students enrolled in the University’s new Bachelor of Nursing Science program, to be offered from Semester 1 next year.
“Students will have access to human simulation models with advanced human responses that can be pre-programmed to mimic a large range of clinical situations,” USC Nursing Program Co-Director Dr Leonie Mosel Williams said.
“These models are used nationally and internationally in nursing and medical education and have the capacity to simulate lung, heart and abdominal sounds, as well as coughing and ‘speaking’ to the students.”
Gallery opens Collective Memory exhibition
More than 200 people gathered at the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery on 30 August for the launch of Collective Memory: Ten Artists of Influence, an exhibition of works by ten leading Australian artists.
The exhibition, which features works by well-known artists such as Max Dupain, Russell Drysdale, Margaret Olley and Ray Crooke, is part of the University’s tenth anniversary Power of Ten celebrations.
Gallery Curator Dawn Oelrich said the exhibition was an excellent opportunity for members of the Sunshine Coast community to learn more about some of Australia's most eminent artists.
“The Collective Memory exhibition is a chance for people to see these works up close, and gain a better understanding of how these artists have helped shape the Australian identity,” Ms Oelrich said.
Collective Memory: Ten Artists of Influence will be on display until Saturday 14 October.
The University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery is open from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday. Admission is free.
2006 Australian of the Year inspires USC students
The 2006 Australian of the Year, Professor Ian Frazer, recently delivered a lecture entitled The Exploration of Possibilities for Better Decisions* to University of the Sunshine Coast students.
Professor Frazer drew on his varied personal experiences during the lecture, offering valuable insights to students studying the core course Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship.
Professor Frazer emigrated from Edinburgh, Scotland to Melbourne in 1980, and moved to Queensland in 1985. It is Professor Frazer’s vaccine for cervical cancer that has helped put Queensland on the map for ground-breaking medical achievements.
At the evening lecture, Professor Frazer offered advice on how to become a driver, rather than an observer, of innovation—a philosophy he has lived by throughout his work over the last two decades.
