Farewell to Judy Jakeman

By Professor Paul Thomas

I’m sure that thousands of people, not just within the University, but in the wider community, would be interested to know that Judy Jakeman retired in July as my personal assistant.

We have been together for 18 years and 12 of those years have been at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

In 1994, when the University was being planned, Judy was the first person to join me, and we occupied temporary offices in Beach-Ocean Road, Maroochydore. As the only person in the office on a daily basis, she fielded every enquiry, and the range of questions from a wide spectrum of people was enormous.

During July there was a farewell function for Judy in the Art Gallery and there were well over 100 people from within and outside the University crowding to say goodbye and thank you.

It was the largest and most emotional farewell we have had at USC, which is an indication of the popularity and respect that exists for this consummate professional woman.

Judy has been involved in some way in every one of USC’s major events in its 12 years of development, and in the early days almost single-handedly.

I am sure you will join with me in congratulating her and wishing her the best for the future. She has been an important part of the history of the University of the Sunshine Coast, and will be missed.

Success for USC at Northern University Games

University of the Sunshine Coast students have celebrated their best-ever campaign at the Northern University Games, winning medals in a number of events.

USC won gold in both the men’s squash and open ten pin bowling, silver in the women’s water polo and bronze in the men’s volleyball. USC teams placed fourth in no less than six other finals matches during the hotly contested week-long sporting event, which was held on the Sunshine Coast in July.

The University of the Sunshine Coast’s successes resulted in the University placing third overall from a field of 13 universities from Queensland, the Northern Territory and northern New South Wales.

USC Team Manager Barry Heath was ecstatic with the result.

"It is great to get gold, especially on home turf," Mr Heath said.

"I think the support of the home crowd has really helped."

This is the first time the Northern University Games have been hosted on the Sunshine Coast, and the first time USC has been the official university partner.

Convention for international alumni

Are you currently working outside of Australia and planning to visit Brisbane in September? If so, you may be interested in attending a conference especially for graduates living and working overseas.

The Australian Universities International Alumni Convention (AUIAC), in which USC will participate in 2006, is a bi-annual conference that brings together Australian alumni from around the world.

The conference provides opportunities to network and to hear some dynamic speakers discuss the many challenges and opportunities that are present in today's global environment. The convention also provides a unique opportunity for delegates to develop business and personal connections, and to capitalise on the experience and knowledge of the vast network of Australian alumni who are well established in their region.

AUIAC 2006 is being held in Brisbane on 13–15 September 2006. If you do register to attend, please let USC Alumni Relations staff know, so we can make contact with you at the convention. We may also be able to assist in subsidising registration fees.

For more information visit the AUIAC 2006 website.
